Ordre du Danebrog

Order of Dannebrog
This order was created in 1219 by King Waldemer the Second in memory of the victory against the Livonian. Its name comes from a flag -the Daneborg (strength of the Danish)- which was said to have fallen from the sky and used by the prince to give strength to his soldiers.
It was abolished during the Reform time, it was restablished on October the 12th 1671 by Christian the Fifth and on June the 28th 1808 by King Frederic the Sixth gave it the organisation it has now.
The Daneborg is to reward all kind of services. The members are divided into 4 classes: Great-Commanders, Great-Cross, Commanders, Knights. Its ribbon is white with red stripes. Its motto is “God and the King”.
The first class wear the golden decoration round their neck with a badge on the left side, the Second class wear a sash from the right side to the left side with the same badge, the Third class wear it round their neck, the Forth class wear it on their lapel.
There is also another lower class called the Men of Daneborg. The members are the people who are supposed to receive a reward but are not good enough to become a knight. They wear the same decoration as the Knights but theirs is silver.
